There's a Christian patriot about whom you should know
He's from "The Land of the Morning Calm;" his name is Ahn Chang Ho
He saw Korea's dark days from his early youth
But he knew that he could help his land as he lived the truth
Studied at a Christian school he thought Confucius taught the best
Until he saw that through the Christian faith his land could have rest
A speech he gave up north on freedom gained him fame;
And though young, assured that foes of Korea would hate his name
In the years of exile he worked hard for his land
In California schools for Koreans were founded by his hand
In China, Korean patriots by him were led;
And planned for the freedom they believed was lying ahead
Captured by the Japanese imprisoned in his land
He never saw the full fruition of the things he had planned
But passing years since he taught and spread the light
Have shown his vision, it was true and his directions were right
Village life should prosper, to the city one need not go
Nor fear forever all the weapons of the oppressive foe
But freedom comes within first, then outwards it must go
These are a few of the teachings of Ahn Chang Ho
